You had to know it was only a matter of time before I started wondering about composting the guinea pigs bedding. Today's Friday Freebie focuses on just that. It turns out that its ok to do since they are herbivores. Here are some links that discuss it.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I am planning to get a compost bin this summer mostly so we can compost the contents our rabbits' litter boxes, which seem to make up a substantial portion of our trash right. Supposedly rabbit poop is one of the best composting materials... I imagine guinea pig waste is similar.
About composting... You could compost ANYTHING that is organic! Which means, was previously alive. This includes animal fats, urine, plants, weeds, leaves, bones, cotton jeans, etc.
Check out this site for how to compost frugally and close the cycle of life!

James,
I've heard of the Humanure book. I think its listed in the bookshelf section of Mother Earth News.
Jen & Steve,
Rabbit poop and guinea pig poop are fairly similar from what I've been reading. Keep us posted on how your composting goes.
