This morning my son asked me if I would make his favorite breakfast. Would you believe its steel cut oats with a handful of currants sprinkled in? If I put the steel cut oats and water into a covered pot on medium heat they are done by the time I get out of the shower. Rob sprinkles in the currants and tops with soymilk before eating. Simple and delicious.

Simple can be good. When I want steel-cut oats in the morning, I put it in the pan with room temperature water the night before to soak. It cuts the cooking time down to about 5 minutes. Then I usually cover it and take my shower. Letting it sit 10-15 minutes finishes it off without additional heat.
Steel cut oats are fantastic. My daughter used to cook them while she was in the shower and everytime they overflowed. What a mess. The are easily done in my rice cooker. No mess, no fuss. I put in 2 cups of steel cut oats and 2 3/4 cups of water push the button and they are done in no time. :o)
Those are both great ideas. Since I don't have a rice cooker, I'm going to give Chile's method a try.
